Tradepoint or Tradepoint POS is very slow on certain computers
Jan/22/2010
In general Tradepoint is designed to be very quick. However in some cases the
software can slow down due to external factors.
Antivirus
Typically the machine running the database may have issues (including remote
users) if the antivirus program decides that it should scan the database files.
Every time any information is requested, the antivirus program will attempt to
scan the entire file to make sure there are no viruses. This can manifest itself
where all of a suddent the software gets slow after an update comes in to the
software or the antivirus software. Disabling the antivirus may not
solve the issue as many still will scan parts of files etc. after disabling. A
full uninstall is typically the only work around.
We currently recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, a free antivirus and
anti-spyware application from Microsoft that works incredibly well, is
incredibly fast, and doesn't interfere with your computer, and doesn't do
anything else but antivirus and anti-spyware. Please do make sure to
remove ALL other antivirus and antispyware applications BEFORE you install MSE
as running two will cause even more problems.
A Virus
The opposite of your Antivirus program going rogue is a real virus. Please do
do a full system can and remove anything found. If nothing is found, or there
are items that cannot be removed, please ensure that you uninstall your current
antivirus and use Microsoft Security Essentials. It can remove viruses that many
other antivirus programs cannot.
Bad Network Card, Router or Other Hardware
Routinely we see issues with computers that are slow because of hardware
issues. Network cards that have been damaged because of power spikes will often
continue to work but cause network related issues that cause the system to slow
down. This can be diagnosed by running the software on the server and gauging
speed. If the server is running fine, then it is likely the network card in the
computer. If all other computers other than the server are having issues it is
either the server's network card or the switch/router/gateway on the
network.
A common problem in ISP provided routers and some off-the-shelf routers and
gateways is that they will route all local network traffic through your internet
connection. This doesn't normally cause issues except when doing file transfers
and any data intensive communications on the local network. Your internet will
appear to be fine, it will only be file and data transfers so this can be hard
to locate without doing a file copy between computers and monitoring speed.
Anything less that 2 megs a second on a file transfer between computers
(MegaBytes not Megabits) is a likely indication that this is occuring. Often
this can manifest itself even on your server as it will route even the local
traffic through the internet connection because of flawed routing tables. You
can often work around this by using the IP address of the local computer, or by
updating the firmware of your router/gateway. Sometimes you'll need to replace
the device outright to see the speed go back to normal. Below is a list of
routers with known problems:
Routers with Known Issues:
Some Bell Sympatico routers
Verizon GT704WG
A variety of DLINK routers.
